Maureen Booth, 57, has been a staff member of The Grey Horse since she was 32 years old and with this experience she still couldn’t believe she would walk into her very own surprise party. As Maureen came through from the back kitchen and looked out from the bar she could see a mountain of food spread all over the pub. Maureen is a mother of two, grand-mother of 2 and wife to John. She said: ‘I am so overwhelmed that this has happened to me I could never have imagined that this would happen to a barmaid like me. “I have been working at this pub for 25 years now and I would have thought I would have known if they were planning something like this… I am so gob-smacked. I would like to thank all that have been involved in organising it and thank you to all my family and friends for coming to raise a glass.” Assistant Manager, Katie Mundy, a colleague that has worked alongside Maureen for 11 years, said: “Maureen has been here well before I first started my job and even helped to show me a few things along the way and organising this has been a great thank you gift to her as she is one of life’s good one’s and I’m so happy that know body has spoilt the surprise by telling her as the expression on her face when she first walked in was priceless. Bee on the look out as pupils work on the Bee Project By Rebecca Black There was a hive of activity in the allotments as pupils rally around to help residents help save the honeybee. By working together by bulb planting they are helping the species of bees which are decreasing in numbers. The head of one of the Primary Schools, Mrs Foster, was interested in the campaign (Bee Friendly Campaign) as she said: Children get to work along side the local residents in trying to save part of a declining species and in doing so they are getting to interact with the residents, older generation, and learn outside the classroom”. Pub food made deliciously Just after being taken over by new management the pub is now back to the original name of the Prospect. Have you heard of it? The term ‘pub food’ is not always known for having high standard however the Chef at the Prospect sure knows his way around the kitchen. The menu includes home-made dishes aiming to please the comfort eaters of the English menu. Dishes can be ordered for sharing which is a great hit with big social gathering and the families as we dive into the Sunday roast as you have never witnessed before as you can have as much or as little as you want as we ordered the unlimited vegetable supply. The diner was steaming hot with a mixture of perfectly seasoned flavours along with a side plate of a massive Yorkshire pudding; this is definitely recommended to share between others. The star of the meal had to be the morish gravy as the flavours of the meat had been infused with the gray which made the gravy flavourful. Despite there only being a small amount of meat on the plate, this has become the best pub food ever. With 2 traditional Sunday Roasts and a mountain of vegetables the meal came to about £24. New Building, ever changing art A new exhibition which combines AS and A2 work together of different opinions and style of Art from the Shiney Row College. Shiney Row College is about to be pulled down and re-born in another location in years to come and yet the inside of the College is still filled with a range of contempary art whether that be fashion, graphics, drama, photography or music, the halls are filled with artwork and sound. Although not currently open to the public there will be an exhibition at the end of the year which will mark the end of the beginning as this will be the last year that the artwork will be shown on these walls. As different art students have different styles and techniques and as they have different assignment themes the representation of art is vast and unique as these pieces could become part of a professional artist’s portfolio. Work will be exhibited at the end of the academic year of 2013, Hebburn Graduate back in class With the success of the Award winning BBC Comedy series Hebburn, University of Sunderland Graduate went back to the classroom to show students what it was like breaking into comedy, TV and live performances. Jason Cook, studied media Production at University Of Sunderland and came back to offer guidance into the industry. Whilst studying at this University Jason Cook first made his move towards comedy and as his performances gained popularity and achieved regular booking part of sketch group Soups, as well taking part in the charity gala in 2004 Sunday for Sammy and with this success it left him with the riskiest move yet, to leave University and as from his master class from students his advice was “don’t follow my example”. BBC Comedy series Hebburn won critical claim and Royal Television Society Award for Best Drama and with this success and knowledge Jason was able to give this advice: “The three words to remember are decide, learn and adapt. I decided I wanted to do comedy, I learnt from my time at university, and I adapt from playing grotty clubs to now do what I do for a living. I would also say it is good to set yourself unachievable goals; if you want to be a stand-up, work in the movies, or write a television show then do it. Someone has to!” The comedy series has started repeating on the BBC Thursday’s ahead of the new series of the show. Student Lock In Sunderland students have taken part in The Bridges Shopping Centre Lock In on October 1st 2013. Probably one of the biggest student queue came from the Bridges on the 1st October, as students took advantage of the 20% off sale in all stores in the Bridges. Figures estimate that over 3,000 students had taken part to come to the event and if retail therapy isn’t your thing there was still a host of activity that would keep you entertained as there was entertainment from a live DJ and stilt-walkers which would keep both the ears and the eyes entertained. The event proved a hit with the students and the businesses as David McGurk, a 19 year old student explained: “ It’s a good way to get young people buying by letting them know about discounts that are available”
